ShieldBiso™ M: Power & Clarity

Formulating sunscreen is always a trade-off. You want high SPF and full coverage, but you also want it to feel light and look clear on the skin. ShieldBiso™ M (INCI: Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, or MBBT) handles this balance. It uses micro-fine organic particles to do two things at once: absorb UV chemically and scatter it physically.

 

1. Protection Range & Stability

By itself, ShieldBiso™ M hits a critical wavelength of 388 nm. That covers your UVB and UVA, and it reaches into the visible light range too. It has a high extinction coefficient, so you don't need much to get good protection.

Where it really shines is stability. In SPF 30 tests (F1 and F4), the AUCI value stayed at 0.91 and 0.96 after sun exposure. Above 0.8 is the stability benchmark. Compare that to standard filters like EHMC/BMBM, which crashed to 0.29. This stuff just doesn't break down in the sun.

2. Transparency & Texture

It comes as a white viscous dispersion in water and glycols. It won't mix into oils. The particle size is the key. When you apply it, light passes through instead of bouncing off. So, you get the protection of a physical blocker without the white cast you get from Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. It feels light, not greasy, and it helps the formula stay waterproof.

3. Safety & Boosting Power

The particles are big. They sit on top of the skin and don't get absorbed. No irritation reports, so it's good for sensitive skin and kids. Plus, it's a team player. It keeps unstable filters like Avobenzone (BMBM) from breaking down, which bumps up the whole formula's SPF and UVA-PF.

4. Regulations

Approved in the EU, Asia, and Australia (up to 10%). Not approved in the US.
